Kien Giang seafood output surpassed the target by 10%

In 2020, the total output of catch and aquaculture in Kien Giang province is 836,175 tons, surpassed the target by 10%.

Mr. Quang Trong Thao, Deputy Director of the Kien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the province reorganized fishing activities in the direction of gradually reducing small vessels and developing large capacity fleet.

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the province’s fishing sector facing many difficulties. However, due to the sharp fall in oil prices and relatively favorable weather, fishing activities are stable and efficient.

For the aquaculture sector, the province has formed a number of concentrated aquaculture areas, especially areas specializing in shrimp farming and a number of other species with high economic value.

The province’s fisheries sector focuses on strengthening fisheries extension, training, guidance and technology transfer to farmers in aquaculture development, especially shrimp farming. Shrimp farming applied Semi-biofloc, Biofloc technology, thus shrimp productivity increased from 10 – 12 tons/ha to 30 – 50 tons/ha.

The province promotes the development of industrial shrimp farming, especially in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle, converting inefficient rice land to a shrimp-rice production model, helping farmers get 2 resources of profit from shrimp and rice in the same area.

The provincial fisheries sector encourages and supports farmers to replicate the high-yielding 2-stage industrial shrimp model, instructing brackish water shrimp farms and households to apply VietGAP standards and international standards based on the market’s demands.

The province strictly managed quality of breeds, feed, aquatic veterinary medicine and disease control in aquaculture, especially shrimp farming.

The province also synchronously implemented measures to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing as recommended by the EC Inspection Delegation.
